Rain and Fog had Maine Socked in

My 69th birthday was quiet, and it was also very foggy, so I barely saw it coming.
Rain was lovely though the constant swish of the windshield wipers had
me taking my Nikon out into the weather for the few photos I took.

I guess if you are going to drive for hours and hours, looking to visit lighthouses in the fog and rain, which was nuts, but in the end, it actually became the perfect backdrop but not so good for photos that were clear.

I do not mess with my photos except maybe to resize, when I shoot, I hit the button when I have filled my viewfinder with just what I want in the final shot.

Like the tug above, I could have placed it on the thirds but for me the bigger picture was the vastness that surrounded this lone, sea bound, tug.

I was once offered a job to become a tugboat captain, down in the Quincy area of Massachusetts. The man in charge was someone I ran a trash truck house to house for him, back in the early 80’s.

I turned it down because I do not swim and as much as I love the sea, I prefer solid ground under me as I look out to sea. Now a days I could kick myself, can you image the sunrises and sunsets I could have captured never mind the sea vessels I would be pushing around lol.

My old boss was such a good man to me in times that were tough. His name was Cookie and oddly I was in the area with my big rig delivering to a pier where he was at you know those big metal warehouses, I do not remember what my load was but as I walked towards him, he smiled and asked how I had been. He knew I had driven cross-country but could never have guessed I finally got away from my ex-husband. He was happy to see me happy.

Now here are the lighthouses up in South Portland Maine. One Brady and I could walk up to the other you would need a boat.

Ram Island Ledge is the one that sits out in the water and Portland Head Light is the one on land

I should have stayed in Portland to capture the other local lighthouses, but I wanted to get up to Owl Head Lighthouse and to stop in at Popham Beach, another favorite place of mine.

The ride got worse the further north we went weather wise; traffic wise at this time of the day on the coastal route we had it pretty much to ourselves.

Owl Head is also home to a transportation museum I have done blogs about in the past. I hope to bring two of our old antique vehicles to a show there this season.

Owl Head is a bit of a walk from the parking lot, and it was still icy with now rain thrown into the mix, so I left him in the lot with the dog as his shoulder surgery had been just 2 days prior and we did not need him hitting the ground.

I tucked my camera under my windbreaker and grabbed my phone. This was the only shot I took with it there. I will try to attach phone photo and video below.

Sorry WP was acting up and not allowing me to show you the video :)

I had wanted to go out to my beach up there but with the weather as such and so close to them closing the gates at state parks I decided to head home.

We arrived back in town with breaks in the sky trying to give us a sunset, but the clouds instead filled in at just about 6 pm.

Do you live near the sea, and do you also love Lighthouse’s?

Have wonderful day
Eunice

  1. In the 60s/70s, my sister lived in Kittery and Wells, so I visited the area a lot, but haven’t been up there for years. I imagine it has changed a lot.

    1. That is the same area that is like a 2nd home for me xo Kittery has many stores now they call them outlets, but Wells is still low key and the beach there is beautiful to walk.

      1. Same here most of my birthdays seem to have nasty weather though :) thankfully no wind on that trip todays are crazy with 60+ mph winds and no power for a while.

  2. You made the best of the weather Eunice and got some nice shots. Yes, I love lighthouses and I love the coast. And I am actually just reading a book called ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter’, by Hazel Gaynor, set in Scotland and Rhode Island. 😃

  3. I do think that you have composed your pictures very well. You are more disciplined than I am. I almost always take too much so that I can crop on the computer.

  4. Great shots and a wonderful post, Eunice, thank you!

    Owl Head looks special.

I’m like you, I like the earth under my feet. x
