Vegetable Gardening Challenges: Coping with Drought

So I had to call uncle and pull the veggies out of my raised beds.

I have to look at reality, it is either ripened on the vine tomatoes or
drinking water. I can not afford to let my well run dry though I guess I am fooling myself, as everyone draws from the aquifer and they are watering brown, burnt grass.

Are you using dish pan water to save your gardens?

Have a great week

I am thinking of those of you on the other side of the Atlantic, as our hurricane Erin is curving that way at the moment, out further into the the wide open spaces and she is fierce, may all of you just get gentle rains.

  1. Oh Eunice! It seems to be flood or drought, no in between. We had lots of rain this spring and most of summer, and most of those rains were torrential downpours which do nothing for our aquifer which is under touch clay. Now, we are in drought with many communities restricting water.
Grass goes dormant in a drought, watering is a huge waste of the resource.
    May you have gentle rains!

    1. You as well my friend. VT washed away several times with the torrents of water and we had enough until mid June came along the only thing growing with gusto are the damn weeds :)

  2. Hi Eunice. I know how you feel. I took my beans out today and just have some tomatoes in pots left… not worth watering anything else any more as the harvest has been terrible. Just too hot and dry almost all spring and summer. Just enjoy the flowers that are left! 🐝🦋

    1. Amen! We had so much rain in April and May I wish now I had saved it all but I let it seep through the gravel to cool the earth. Fall seeds going in Maybe Sunday fingers crossed :)

  3. This is crazy! Drought, yet big waves are coming. Yes,I know sea water is salty, but something is off kilter.

It’s been scorching hot here all summer. There’s enough water, but it’s been too, hot for proper ripening.

People should be thinking about alternatives to grassy lawns. Those days seem to be over.

Drought resistant pollinator gardens are more sensible.

    Be well, Eunice!

    1. Yes I kept my gravel driveways so water could percolate through, no paved paradises here :). I have grass but not the type one pours chemicals over I have a lot of clover for the bees and now rabbits. So many bees this year, all types actually and lots of water stations for everyone seems they prefer my well water over the river :)

      1. You and your place sound wonderful , Eunice.
Yes, Bees!!! We have clover instead of grass, and the Bees are very busy.

        Paved paradise = fools paradise.
        Be well! 🌹

Love to hear from you
